Bokoni Platinum Mine's Intricate Acquisition Journey

In the vast realm of mining, few ventures shine as brightly as the acquisition of the Bokoni Platinum Mine (BPM). But what makes this acquisition so special? Let's embark on a journey through the lustrous world of platinum mining and uncover the gems hidden within this monumental transaction.

A Historical Perspective

The story of BPM is deeply rooted in the rich tapestry of South Africa's mining history. Located in the Limpopo Province, BPM is a part of the North-Eastern Limb of the Bushveld Complex. Historically owned by Bokoni Platinum Holdings Proprietary Limited, with stakeholders including Anglo American Platinum Limited (AAPL) and Atlatsa Resources, BPM boasts the second-largest PGM resource in South Africa.

The Acquisition: A Game-Changer

Dr Patrice Motsepe, the Executive Chairman of ARM, eloquently captures the essence of this acquisition: "We are pleased to have concluded the acquisition of BPM which includes a large, high-grade resource and existing infrastructure... As we build and operate BPM, we will create approximately 5,000 jobs of which 2,500 will be permanent."

But why is this acquisition so monumental? For starters, a new subsidiary of African Rainbow Minerals Platinum Proprietary Limited (ARM Platinum) has been established to acquire 100% of BPM from AAPL and Atlatsa. This new subsidiary, ARM Bokoni Mining Consortium Proprietary Limited (ARM BMC), will see ARM Platinum owning 85% of it. Furthermore, the purchase consideration for this acquisition is a whopping R3.5 billion, settled in cash.

The Financial Backbone

ARM has ensured that the acquisition is backed by a robust financial plan. Not only does ARM have sufficient cash resources to fund the purchase consideration, but a Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS) is also in the pipeline, set to be completed in approximately 12 months. An estimated R5.3 billion of development capital, in real 2021 terms, is projected to be spent over three years. With the completion expected during 2022, the acquisition is well on its way to reshape the platinum mining landscape.

Bokoni: A High-Grade Opportunity

BPM is not just any mine; it's a high-grade opportunity. As of 31 December 2020, it had measured, indicated, and inferred mineral resources of 153 million ounces contained 4E PGMs with a grade of 5.87 g/t. The UG2 of BPM is of a much higher grade than the Merensky, making it a lucrative venture. Moreover, the established mining and processing plant infrastructure further adds to its appeal.

The Future of BPM and ARM

The acquisition of BPM is set to significantly reposition ARM Platinum's portfolio mix. With BPM's steady state production estimated at approximately 300,000 ounces per annum, ARM's total 6E PGM production is likely to see a substantial boost. By 2026, ARM Platinum could be positioned as one of the top 5 PGM producers.

In Conclusion

The acquisition of BPM by ARM is not just a business transaction; it's a testament to the potential and promise of the platinum mining industry in South Africa. By bridging the gap between complex mining operations and the general public, we hope to have shed some light on the intricate world of platinum mining. As we look to the future, the Bokoni Platinum Mine Acquisition stands as a beacon of progress, innovation, and prosperity.
