Technical Director: New Programme and Innovation
The Aurum Institute is offering a great opportunity to suitably qualified and experienced staff to contribute towards our mission to improve the health of people and communities through innovation in Health Research and Systems. We are focused on research, support and implementing integrated approaches to managing TB and HIV. The following position have become available as part of the New Business Development Unit and you are welcome to apply should you meet the requirements of the position. This position will lead the design and delivery of Aurums entire portfolio of work, including establishing and managing relationships with new partners, multiple governments and funders; leading a team of highly professional staff to deliver outstanding work to all clients; providing strategic insight into the monitoring and evaluation of the portfolio; undertaking financial oversight across all country budgets; and playing a significant strategic role in the leadership and growth trajectory of Aurum and its affiliates. THIS ROLE IS BASED IN SOUTH AFRICA OR EUROPE OR US, BUT CAN BE FLEXIBLE WITH THE LOCATION WITH INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL (APPROXIMATELY 35%-50% OF THE TIME), AS AND WHEN TRAVEL IS POSSIBLE IN THE CONTEXT OF COVID RESTRICTIONS.Indicative responsibilitiesLead engagements and forge close working relationships with partners, multiple governments, including Ministers and senior government officials, to oversee the end-to-end design, proposal submission and implementation of projects in public health, implementation research and clinical research; and ensure work is cognisant of, and responsive to the wider vision and mission of Aurum and affiliates;Build a coherent portfolio of work within and across countries ( in addition to growing new country programs) with attention to strategic ambition, project quality, risk management, robust evidence generation, and sound budget management;Help to ensure the financial sustainability of the organisation by leading on the development of new country engagements and supporting the Group Strategy and Partnership Officer in the development of new funding relationships and maintaining existing onesProvide vision and leadership around how technical assistance might be delivered more sustainably in Aurum and affiliate key sectors of support;Ensure Aurums programmes benefit from high quality technical expertise and advice obtained through either in-house expertise or consultants or a combination of both, as relevant for the individual programmes;Work under the supervision of the Chief Growth Officer, in alignment with the CEO and SMT to reform programme management systems and processes to ensure Aurum is operationally fit-for-purpose for a small, growing non-profit consultancy working towards business diversification strategy;Lead initiatives internally and with external partners to deepen staff understanding of Aurums investment areas, best practice and the practicalities of successful partnership with private sector, other NGO/Foundations, donors and government officials;Line manage new programme, business development staff, including remotely, to quality assure delivery against programme objectives as well as the personal and professional development of individuals;Work with the Research and Evaluation Managers to ensure that all of Aurums projects have contextually-relevant and operationally efficient monitoring and evaluation plans that inform best practice internally and externally and to deliver robust impact;Collaborate with Communication Team and Knowledge Management to keep abreast of the latest global research, news and trends in health, development and country/client contexts to inform Aurum and affiliates strategy and programming;Report to the Group Strategy and Partnerships Office on the health of the programmes portfolio, flagging significant issues, as they arise and as appropriate, for discussionParticipate as an active member of Aurums Senior Management Team to provide strategic and operational leadership across the organization as Aurum matures and grows towards Group level function.Other specific responsibilities Operationalize, standardize and ensure quality control on newly developed Business Development Standard Operating Procedures for key Business Development systems and processes including lead sourcing, donor/partner tiering, business network planning/stakeholder engagement, and proposal development Lead proposal development teams by ensuring that Business Development SOP's are followed to put together strong proposal teams with clear roles and responsibilities, appropriate links to supporting teams (e.g. finance, HR etc.), to develop high-quality and winning proposals. Build a significant pipeline of well-aligned funders who are aligned with Aurums mission, and Business Investment Strategy, leveraging your own networks and networks of key leadership at Aurum. Explore opportunities with philanthropic donors. Support moves management of Aurum leadership via a structured stakeholder engagement planning to ensure increased visibility for Aurum, and stronger strategic relationships with critical forward-looking funders in the global health arena. Ensure that key Aurum Group Leadership including the Chief Growth Officer (or Chief Business Development, Strategy, Innovation Officer), CEO, etc., are poised to steward and enhance relationships with donors partners to maintain and grow their support. Build capabilities and tools to manage these relationships at scale.Project Management Unit (PMU)/Innovation Fund Oversee Aurums newly established PMU, including a PMU Manager, to trial and pilot promising innovations that have the potential to put Aurum on the global arena, and attract additional funding for scale Develop appropriate systems, processes and criteria for selecting innovations for implementation via the innovation fund Manage the technical and operational aspects of implementing the pilot projects and transitioning them to relevant units at Aurum when scaled
