Senior Research Specialist
The Inclusive Economic Development (IED) division undertakes research to transform educational outcomes and increase economic participation. It recognises that education and the economy have long been linked, and conducts research to understand educational performance and improve learning outcomes, and to interrogate social, spatial and structural obstacles to economic participation.Current research in IED occurs under the themes of Changing Economies and Education and Livelihoods, and includes assessments of the effectiveness of government programmes in maths and science education, skills development, land, housing and economic development; participation of young people in accessing dignified and decent work; the transformation of higher education; and innovation that allows for wider access to services, and supports food security.IED seeks to appoint a suitably qualified Senior Research Specialist for a period of 5 years to be based in Cape Town, Durban or Pretoria. The position is in the Changing Economies theme and covers all focus areas of economics excluding Agricultural Economics in which area we already have a number of researchers. Key responsibilities1.Design, manage and conduct high quality research under the broad umbrella of economics that has both strategic and policy relevance;2.Stimulate public debate and promote evidence-based policy on issues that relates to poverty and equality;3.Formulate research proposals and secure funding for research projects;4.Manage research teams and large scale long-term research projects;5.Deliver high-quality results and reports to budget and deadline;6.Engage civil society and develop communities of practice to ensure uptake of evidence to transform economic participation outcomes;7.Produce high quality knowledge outputs through publishing in accredited refereed journals, books, and book chapters;8.Ensure research impact through government engagement, policy briefs and research reviews;9.Communicate research findings across media platforms and at academic conferences and forums; and 10.Develop research skills and competences through formal and informal training for self and others.
