In delivering social science that makes a difference, the Research Programmes of the Human Sciences Research Council initiate and undertake policy-oriented research projects and programmes from its offices in Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Pretoria. Its public-purpose mandate is set out in the Human Sciences Research Council Act of 2008.The Human and Social Capabilities research programme within the HSRC employs a multi-disciplinary group of social scientists and public health specialists who conduct numerous empirical and policy-related studies each year, three-quarters of which are donor-funded. The Human and Social Capabilities division conducts transdisciplinary, intersectional, policy and programme-relevant research to improve health, well-being and promote a socially just and cohesive society.HSC is looking to appoint a PhD Research Intern for a period of 3 years to be based in Cape Town and PietermaritzburgPhD RESEARCH INTERN2 positions1 based in Pietermaritzburg and 1 in Cape Town Ref: HSC PhD Intern 07/2021CT HSC PhD Intern 07/21 PTwo PhD Research Internship is currently available. The PhD Research Intern Programme in the HSRC provides the successful candidate with an opportunity to further develop their research expertise by working with subject experts and project specialists. The research internship experience is intensive and seeks mature individuals who are able to work independently as well as part of a team. While appointees will be exposed to a wide variety of project-related research, they will be expected to complete their thesis within three years. Time is set aside for this purpose. In addition to being registered for a PhD degree at a recognised South African university and currently working on their degrees, or eligible for registration at a recognised South African university, research interns are required to participate in all aspects of the research process as they work with other staff on different research projects. Among other duties, they will participate in the following activities under supervision: Support the research and research-related work of the HSC Programme Assist with the conceptualisation and execution of research projects Assist with the formulation of research questions and writing proposals Assist with the submission of research proposals for ethical review Collection and analysis of data Writing up of research results, research reports and manuscripts for publication Presenting at conferences Management or supervision of research projects
